Shimano 105 Rear Shifter Only Clicks 4 Times
Hello,
I have a 4 year old Sava with about 20K miles, original equipment. After my rear derailleur stopped shifting I replaced the cable, which was very frayed. However, I now notice that when I click the small lever until it stops, and then click the large lever, it will only click 4 times before it stops. I tried cleaning the shifter with WD-40 and it works smoother now, but still only clicks 4 times. I saw a couple of posts stating that mechanical problems in the shifter may limit it to 4-5 gears, but they were vague about what to do about this.
Thanks for any advice.

The three possibilities I first think of are:
- The replacement cable is not properly seated in the shifter's spool and the mis positioned cable head is snagging on the inside of the shifter, limiting how far the cable spool can rotate.
- A strand or more of the frayed shift cable broke off the cable completely and is now somehow jammed up inside the shifter pod and preventing the full number of index positions from working
or
-2 The factory lube has begun to become gummy. Although one would think the WD 40 flushing would have mitigated that.
I would disconnect the shift cable from the der and see if with just hand holding the shifter action is any different. How about if the replacement cable is removed from the shifter? Andy

When you replaced the cable, you did make sure that all the clicks were pulled out of the shifter before you installed the cable and set the cable in the pinch bolt, didn't you? I don't know if it's possible to thread the cable in the STI if it's in any position but fully to the 10 or 11 cog or whatever your smallest tooth count cog is. However you might should check if no one else knows.
