Cassette replacement
Hi I have an old road bike with a 6 speed cassette and Shimano SIS 600 derailleur. Chain needs replacing and maybe the cassette.
Current 6 speed cassette has 24T-13T on the rear. Front has 52T on the largest of two rings.
Options for new cassette:
SHIMANO MF TZ500 7 Speed 14-28T or 6 Speed 14-28T. Would both work with the derailleur. Which would be best ?
Current 6 speed Shimano Hyperglide cassette.

Is it a Friction or Index shifter?
IF Index, than see post #2.
A MF-???? is a FREEWHEEL, not a cassette-
Freewheel or Cassette?

your 600 SIS derailleur will work for either freewheel... it's the shifter that determines if you can easily switch to 7 speed, or will need to install a 7 speed or Friction style shifter.
is the shifter an "indexed" click type, or does it swing without clicks?
If it's a Click type Indexed shifter... is their 5 clicks? or 6 clicks? 6 click is SEVEN Speed, Seven Position... many times , for whatever reason, people install a 6 speed cluster on a 7 speed bike, and since the six speed gaps are so similar to 7 speed spacings, the Shifter still indexes well...if the cable is now disconnected, for whatever reason, remember to maintain Tension on it when testing the index count, or the cable Will Get Kinked, and not work well in the future
and before you ask.. upgrading to a 6-7-8 speed chain will be fine, and actually improve shifting... Cool, huh?
Shimano chains are a bit better, and will last longer, but KMC and SRAM both sell nice 6-7-8 chains too.
the Nickel plated ones resist rusting, and KMC actually sells one called Z-51RB that is Zinc plated, and the "RB" stands for Rust Buster.
proper lubing will also prevent rust, but that doesn't always happen...

Did 6 speed Hyperglide cassettes exist? I thought Uniglide did 6 speed cassettes while all other 6 speed were freewheel. Then 7 speed came out and Hyperglide took over. The ends of the old 7 speed freehub were threaded, allowing one to use a Uniglide cassette with the new hub.
