Mix and matching Shimano 600 tricolor and newer Ultegra/105 parts

Hi!

I am thinking about switching some of my Shimano 600 Tricolor to a 2X10 Ultegra r6700 shifters/brakes & front derailleur and a 105 rear derailleur. I also have the 2X10 cassette.

Other than the freehub, chain and maybe the cables, are there other parts that would need to be changed?

I would like know your opinions about keeping the 600 crankset with the worn chainring with the newer 2X10 parts? And about using the newer front derailleur with the old crankset?

Thank you for your advices!
Adrien

Possibly chainrings. 10 speed rings usually have a slightly closer spacing for the narrower chain.

Your freehub may be fine for a 10 sp cassette. In most cases if the freehub body takes an 8 speed cassette, 10 will work. Couple of exceptions to note, but probably not applicable:
Early Dura ace Uniglide 8 speed hub.
Early 8 speed freehubs (FH-6402, FH-1056...) that had the cassette really close to the spoke flange, could pose problems if you use a cassette with a with a small low sprocket, eg 12-21, 12-23 range.

Thank you!

The cassette should be an 11-28 so it may be problematic... It is also is a sram sold in bundle with the other parts so I guess it is compatible

Do you know where could I find new chainrings compatible with the old crankset/bottom bracket? Also, can the bottom bracket/crankset be swapped to a newer one? It has a BB-UN71 installed right now, but would be interested in swapping it for a better/newer one in the future.

I am guessing the 10 speed chain will fall in between the two chain rings on the 6400 crankset.
As for the freehub- sometimes the 11t small cog fits on the old HG freehub with full length splines. It is not always the case that 11t small cog must use hubs with shortened splines.

If you will have a 28 low sprocket it should be fine on that end.

The 11T could be a problem as mentioned. 11T normally works with a freehub body with the shortened spline. See the pic below. The M732 has the Uniglide threads to the end, (disregard that this is 7 speed, the 8 look the same on this end), which may not fit a 11T outer sprocket.

As for the crank, you should be able to find just chainrings in 130 BCD. If you do want to change the whole crank, older Cdale road frames are standard threads.

They won't. I used an 8 speed Dura Ace with 10 speed. Worked perfectly. And that was essentially a six speed crank.

The original rear derailleur will work with 10 speed shifters. The later STI compatible FD will also work with 10 speed., but the previous one that swings at an angle will not.

IMO, the chain falling in between the rings does not happen. That space between the rings is the same, the chains for 10 speed are thinner, and are necessary for a 10 speed cassette spacing, not the chain rings. I have used a 600 crank set with Shimano 8 thru10 speed components. And as mention above new compatible rings are easily available. The rear derailleur was a 1050 that was rated a 32 tooth.

This has been my experience.

Thank all of you guys for the help!

So it could be possible to swap between a 8 and 10 speed setup by only changing the cassette and the shifter/brake levers? A nice thing to know!
