S.A.F.E. Bike Lane Grading (LA)

Got a very easy but very helpful activity for y'all. If you live in Los Angeles, SAFE (Streets are for Everyone) needs volunteers to simply ride Class I & IV bike paths and then fill out short surveys to evaluate their condition. This is for their reports cards that they send to city officials. They need at least four people per segment of path all throughout the city. I'm too new to be able to post the link here, but you can Google "Streets are for Everyone Bike Path Report Card."

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

I'm too far to help, but here's a suggestion you might pass along.

Install small signs at various points asking for user input. You could make it super easy using QR codes that take you to thd site, and include a segment indrntfier. Since people don't like to write, there could be a rating grid listing specific issues, ie. litter, pavement condition, etc.

Done right this can produce ongoing real time info

It's a good idea, in theory. The organization certainly needs an easier reporting system than they have.

I think the main issue would be installing such signs with LADOT permission. My guess is they wouldn't officially allow it, and no advocacy organization wants to sour their already-tepid relationship with government in a bike-hostile city such as LA. Secondly, there would be a lot of junk data.

I'd love to see S.A.F.E. create a reporting app/site for this, similar to the excellent Bike Lane Uprising app. As I get more involved, I'll pass along your suggestions to the group. Thanks!

The answer's always no until you ask.

If SAFE were to design the signs and make a well presented proposal (sale), there's a decent chance the city would buy into it, especially if it included issues the city might care about.

IME advocacy works best as a partnership rather than a tug of war.

I am not understanding why four volunteers per segment of path are necessary. How long is a segment of path anyway? Most people simply want to use a resource. What I would be doing is working with the city to designate their own method for obtaining a running report on the condition of the bike path network. How they do it shouldn't be your worry. Is there something problematic with the bike paths in general?
