These bikes had a great price point in terms of performance & componentry - almost enough to overlook the "deluxe swing set" tubing. Almost bought one of these as my first "real" road bike, but their smallest frame size was a bit too big for comfortable standover.

The letter from Donald Horton of Rock Island, Illinois, asking about lightning strikes, caught my attention. It is certainly a concern here in the midwest. It also got my attention because a cyclist in that area was struck by lightning when getting onto a bridge crossing the Mississippi. He lived, fortunately. Afterwards, he commented that he initially thought he had been hit by a truck. The chain he was wearing around his neck had melted from the large current that flowed through it, and the lightning left a divot in the paving on the bridge.
The question about whether rubber tires are adequate insulation to protect a bike or car from lightning does pop up often. My observation is that since the lightning just traveled through perhaps a thousand feet of thin air, it's not a problem to just bypass the tires and jump a few more inches of air from the rim to the ground.

Oh man, when I was a kid I would buy Bicycling magazine whenever I saw it in stores, which was sporadic sometimes. I would read each issue several times then throw it in the trash. Dang! I wish I would have kept them. Little did I know that Bicycling magazine would be such an excellent font of information for vintage bikes.

I want to see the 100 mph lunar railbike within my lifetime. No air resistance on the lunar surface + low rolling resistance from steel on steel.
I'm thinking the speed on uncompacted lunar soil could be an underestimate also. 1/6 gravity means huge tall wheels might not be as much of a fall hazard.

Well, China is rushing toward the first world and that means cars.
When I was in Beijing and Xian, bikes were few and far between, and the drivers made Balmer and Boston seem tame. Oh well. Progress.

a lot of good advice there, especially about the hazards of chromed steel rims! I've only done it a few times, but it seemed to take forever before the brake pads got the water wiped off the rims and started to actually slow the bike!
I'm a bit surprised that fenders weren't mentioned until the last paragraph. A decent pair of Blumels did a lot to keep the crud off of the rider and bike.

In 1978 Joe Breeze had finished his first ten "Breezer" frames. This was our first real mountain ride, a shakedown if you will, in Mineral King Wilderness, where the Breeze family had a cabin. Totally illegal to ride those trails now, but until we did, nobody had.
Wende Cragg, Joe and I spent a week riding trails. Since you asked, here are a few more pix from that adventure.
