I saw that too and got super excited. But when I tried to order one it said it was out of stock :(

adriano 04-03-12 08:31 AM

unless theres a new scandium monster in the fold, i cant see why theyd end the lightning.

Scrodzilla 04-03-12 08:44 AM

It most likely didn't sell nearly as well as we think it does.

djpfine 04-03-12 02:53 PM

Well for the non-Lightning folk, what are the thoughts on the Classic vs. Special? Are the lugs on the Special worth the $200 price increase?

adriano 04-03-12 03:37 PM

but the rest of their snoozer lineup does?

markaitch 04-03-12 04:58 PM

^^^this is too funny...the forum's current biggest bikedirect shill knocking wabi bikes

Who? adriano? Because there are definitely other people who are way more shill . . . er.

Wabi posted on their facebook that it was "supplier issues" for the reason the Lightning is being discontinued. I don't think it was sales #'s that caused it to be scrapped especially since it's being replaced with an even more expensive model.

They have some details listed on their site now about it.

Here's the first glimpse of the new Wabi
Lightning SE (steel edition) which I hope to
have here in May (the one pictured is a proto
I'm riding now). Here's the basic info:

- Columbus Spirit OS tubes, tig welded
- Carbon fork with alu steerer
- Same component grouping as the other
Wabi's
- Overall weight for a 55cm with drop bars
and 2 brakes (no pedals) anticipated to be
17.2 lbs (49cm proto is 16.9 lbs)
- Color options TBD. Proto in matte Black
- Expected retail: $1095

This is an exciting bike- it has the
responsiveness of a superlight bike with the
ride and stability of high quality steel.

As I have more info I'll pass it along.

Can't believe this thread is still going. Out of the 20 or so bikes I have owned over the years, the Classic is easily my favorite road bike.

Holy ****. The return of Papa Het!

:( There goes the weight weenie on a budget 15lb Wabi. Weight aside, I'm still interested in how this turns out. Columbus toobz have me interested...

Edit:
Oh wait... $1000? Mehhhhhh......

hamfoh 04-05-12 11:08 PM

1100 is hard to get too excited about, but considering it's a complete steel bike with a carbon fork, at that weight, the price is still pretty nice. I just hope they don't have ****ty/limited color options this time around

$1095?? If I were to spend that much on a Wabi, I might as well get the Special at that point!

+1

I knew that Brian had a Wabi, but my first reaction to seeing his post was, "Brian???"

I don't get the "unique" part, but what bikes can you get at a better price, for similar quality?

icyclist 04-08-12 05:18 PM

I took a look at the prototype when I was at Wabi "headquarters" a few months ago. It is a great looking bike (I have the Special and it seriously cuts into my time on a geared bike).

By the way, although the components on the Special aren't high-end, they certainly are good quality. And after deciding to switch out a few items for flashier brands, I discovered the Velo saddle is as light as my Specialzed Toupe, and the Kendas that came with the bike as light as a pair of Conti 4000 S tires.

The components may not have stickers, screening, or laser etching of a name brand, but I don't see anything cheap on my Classic. I did swap the headset for a black FSA, and threw on some Campy brakes, but there was nothing wrong with the original ones.

Subject: Wabi Lightning schedule, offer

Hi Folks,
Excuse the group e-mail, but I wanted to give you an update on the progress of the Lightning SE bikes getting here to Wabi Cycles. It’s been a bit later than I hoped, but it’s looking like the bikes will be in my facility by the first week in June. I apologize for the long wait, and I know many if not all of you originally wanted the Lightning, and some have been waiting a while.
Consequently, I have decided to offer to you folks who have given me your e-mail addresses and expressed interest in the new SE a little gift. The retail on this bike will be $1095.00, but for any of you who place an order for one by May 15th, I’ll take $100 off of that price.
If you decide to take me up on the offer above, you can call me or go on-line (http://www.wabicycles.com/Lightning-SE-offer.html) to place your order, using coupon code SE12 to get your $100 discount.
Placing the order doesn’t commit you to buying the bike, and your card won’t be charged until I ship your bike.
Also, got a new photo from the factory, showing the rear drop out and how they will be joined to the seat and chain stays (see the link above). An extra touch!
Any questions, let me know.

Best Regards,
Richard

I bet the green is going to look really nice. Not sure why it's called aquamarine because on my monitor it doesn't look anything like what I consider Aqua to look. Is Athracite a fancy word for black? Because thats what it looks like to me lol
