Training with power

In case you didn’t know, training with power is all the rage. In fact, Joe Friel likens getting a power meter to a person with weak eyesight donning his first pair of glasses. Of course, the reality is that riding with a power meter is more like having sex with an electrocardiogram, in that it takes the fun out of the whole enterprise and buffets you with data you don’t really need. Physical sensation will guide you through your ride the same way it guides you through sex, and if you can’t do either without electronics it’s possible you have a problem that technology by itself may be insufficient to address.

LOL! How many times have I seen where PE does not match force generated at the pedals or heart rate? Too many times, especially when one is getting a little "over done".

I'm done opening threads on power. every time I do, I think either:
a) my power tap is calibrated low,
b) everyone else's power thingy's are calibrated way too high, or
c) that I just suck.
None of these is good for my confidence.

You're just not putting in the BF, (or more accurately, the BS) conversion factor.

I'm just going to use two cheap 10$ Radio Crack Multimeters and measure Voltage and Amperes. And voila, power meter on the cheap.
I cannot understand how that Schwag can cost almost a 1000$ or more when I can build it for 20$.

You might want to rephrase that to "had sex while wearing a HRM"

Ok, build one that works reliably, and doesn't weigh more that 250grams, and I'l give you $40 for your trouble.

If it were that easy, somebody would build the $20 powermeter, sell it for $300, make a very nice profit and put SRM, Saris, etc out of business.

One big problem I'm sure is the limited manufacturing scale.

Tried it, but I'm having trouble in WKO+ getting my TSS from it. Anyone know how to do this?

I still have a ton of fun on my bike, my PM is just a tool that allows me to quantify what I've done on my bike. You seem to not be able to achieve this balance, I have.

+1

Its not that hard to have fun with power. You guys DO know that the head unit is removable right? Which means if you wanna just go ride your bike and not worry about how weak you are then you can just take it off. And then if you feel like training with power just put the head unit back on. GASP

When the first heartrate monitors came out, articles actually suggested doing this. So I did.

"44 beats a minute? Aren't you enjoying this?"

I stopped wearing them for that shortly thereafter.

Probably more fun putting the HRM on her and seeing how high of a reading you can get.
