7 speed cassette on 8/9 speed hub?

Can you mount a 7 speed hyperglide cassette on an 8/9 speed freehub?

I have a older road bike that came stock with 14 speed Shimano SIS and cheap wheels. I have broken several spokes on the rear wheel and am debating about rebuilding it or replacing it with a new wheel. I have a 7 speed freehub so I believe the frame spacing is 126mm OLD. The frame is a Raleigh technium frame (Al main tubes, steel fork and rear stays), so I think I would be OK installing a modern rear wheel with 130mm OLD.

What I don't know is if I can mount my old cassette on an 8/9 speed freehub, and if so do I need some kind of spacer?

Yes, you can do it, yes, you need a spacer. I think its 4mm, but don't quote me on that.

Late 7-speed hubs were built on 130mm dropout spacing.

Meaning what? The modern road bike is 130mm, the MTB is 135. This has nothing to do with the freehub body dimension though. The 7 speed body was shorter than that now used for 8/9 speeds.

You can get a low end (Altus?) 7 speed hub spec'd as an 130 or 135mm.

The OP said he believed his frame spacing is 126 because the cassette is 7-speed. I was simply pointing out that not all 7-speeds have 126 spacing. An 8, 9, or 10-speed hub might slip right in.
