My weekend: Dinner with Lance Armstrong, 70-mile ride.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My weekend: Dinner with Lance Armstrong, 70-mile ride.

Best weekend ever for biking: I bought $300 of rain gear, bought a cyclocross bike, went to the LIVESTRONG fundraiser dinner with Lance Armstrong at the Nike HQ campus, rode 70-miles with the new equipment through the wettest conditions of the year. Awesome.

At the dinner for fund raisers >$3K. In my case, thank you corporate sponsorship (Comcast/Discovery Channel).

View from my table. Nice seats huh?

The stage.

Doug Ulman, the CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Chris Carmichael... this guy was great.

Alberto Salazar also spoke... (he is an old marathon runner sponsored my Nike.)

I'll second the ride report. Sadly I didn't get to go to the dinner, but the ride was one of the wettest, coldest, funest rides I've done in a while. I will say that 70 miles in the rain was harder than the park city century a couple weeks ago.

As the saying goes, a bad day on the bike is better than a good day at the office...

Congratulations on your ride. I know I had a great time, I'm just recovering from a 12 hour drive back to Salt Lake City last night.

'an old marathon runner sponsored by nike'

he's a 3 time nyc marathon winner!

he was also a well paid 'pace maker' for a rookie runner last year.

Lance was surprisingly eloquent, casual and funny.

He spoke on a range of issue from his battle with cancer to social policy.

Obligatory schmoozing with big donors to the Livestrong Foundation.

Hey, it was a pair of Nike's that got Forrest a-runnin' in the movie, so I can see him as a perfect pacer for the Lance Marathon Spectacle.

Here's me and my fiance post dinner.

The next day, finishing the Livestrong ride. The new Lemond is smooth in a way that only a Cadillac or a bike with 35C tires can be.

Another one... posing at the Livestrong Village on the Nike campus, where the ride started and ended. It rained for 90% of the day.

It would have been fun to hear what Alberto Salazar had to say. Back in his day he could run a 2:10 marathon in his sleep.

I think it may be the combination of the wet 50-deg weather and my new bike with 35c knobbies, but I feel worse today than I did after the Seattle-to-Portland one-day double century this summer.

Congrats on your ride.

He actually had a great story... apparently he had cardiac arrest 6 months ago while working out at the Lance Armstrong Training Facility at the Nike campus. His heart stopped for 24 minutes. He transitioned that into the goals of the LAF and tied it in somehow. I can't really do it justice.

That's pretty much the ONLY place I could run a 2:10 marathon.

Cool, I heard they canned the 100 mile route. Good decision by the race organizers - I ride it all the time and 40mph gusts on Bald Peak would not have been fun!

There was some great spectating at the Barlow cross race in all the rain. Looked like a late November cross race.

Yeah, I was signed up for the century but I didn't complain when they capped it at 70-miles. It was raining horizontally by the time I circled Hagg Lake.

The horizontal rain sucked. I was a little upset by the lack of the century but in retrospect it was a really good idea by the ride organizers...

As a side note I will say to all those out there with deep section wheels, make sure that your spare tube stems reach all the way through the rim and have enough sticking out for a co2 or pump to seat itself on. I stopped to loan a guy my pump but the stem was too short for both the co2 attachment or my pump to really get seated on.

Anyway, rant off.

It was a great ride and regardless of your views of Lance, the ride raised a total of 1.7 million that goes directly to research and survivorship programs.
