Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We're going to spit on you....

Was out doing a quick (not really) 30 miles yesterday. I'm fat, outta shape, hairy and pale...

Rolling along on the road that we all take to head west out of town, its a 45mph road, maybe a foot and a half of shoulder and not to much traffic cause it kinda goes past the tracks and the sketchy part of town.. I hear a vehicle approaching from behind.. fast.. I'm on the white line, and move over, but this a-hole in a van comes by me about a foot away at easily 80mph, just hauling ass. I almost shat myself..

a couple of miles down the road, i turn the corner, cross the tracks, and HA HA HA.. said A-hole has been pulled over by the cops. He is standing next to his van, with no shirt on while one cop is talking to him, and the other is opening the back of the van...

As I get close to the scene, the cop he was talking to turned to take a few steps away, looked up and saw me, I just gave him a nod and he put his head back down to his shoulder radio etc.. So then it was just me...and the a-hole.. staring at one another.. I spit on him as I rolled on by, and then just kept riding.. hit him square on too. He yelled somthing, but that was the end of it.

Wow. What would you have done if that hocker had hit the cop instead?

You should have stopped and told the cop that the guy tried to run you off the road. That would have been far more effective than spitting on him...which is considered assault BTW.

Um... I think just giving him "The Look" would have sufficed.

Do you ride that stretch of road often? I don't think I'd want to encounter that dude again. He may want to do more to you than just spit back at ya.

So your saying your just as hillbilly as the redneck that got pulled over********** Maybe you should carry a paint ball gun with you when you ride. That would be cool too!

Giving him a big smile would of been more effective and not of brought you down below his level.

Yup, missed opportunity to make it worse for the arse who almost killed you. Good thing the cop did not stop you after you spat at the other guy.

I agree with horkin' on the driver.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but it sometimes does make you feel a whole lot better.
Plus,
I think it is a great story that will span time...

Exactly. Here's my deal with this sort of confrontation with car and truck drivers:

When I'm out on my bike, pretty much all the cars and trucks run together. None of them stand out and after my ride is over, there's little to no chance that I will remember any particular car or truck if I should ever see them on another ride.

HOWEVER, if I do something that makes me particularly memorable to an arsehole in a car or truck, you can bet your bottom bracket that jerk's memory is going to bounce right back to that moment the next time our paths cross. And to make that fact worse, he might confuse some other rider for me and exact my payback on the wrong guy.

Too funny.

Best would be to have mentioned it to the cop and then huck a loogie on him when the cop's not looking.

+1 over here in the shetland isles we get none of this bother which is posted on the BF all the time, thank god! or i would probably have done time by now, u guys put up with so much ****. i'm afraid you will never change the attitude of these a-holes, retaliation will probably make things worse the next time these idiots pass a roadie but sometimes you just have to give as good as you get. f*ck em all

the only problem we get is sheep, i don't think retaliation against them would make any odds, a good Sunday dinner at best......

Spitting is disgusting. Sure he deserved it (and some...) but you shouldn't have lowered yourself to his level. Never mind its done now. The guy got nailed for speeding. :]

Nice job. It sucks working so much that you can't ride and then having a near mow-down because of some jack ass. He got what was coming to him.

At least you didn't attack him with a U-lock....

DO NOT STOP!!!

Never interfere when an officer has seized a vehicle. Trust me, you don't want to get in the middle of it, or distract the officer in any way. It's a good way to end up with bigger problems than you may have ever imagined.

Just keep riding, don't even look, and keep your distance.

Oh, and spitting on someone is not apropriate. Unless you pummeled him to the ground after he just insulted your wife.

So you assaulted someone in the presence of two police officers, and they did nothing? Sounds more than a bit unrealistic.

If this is true, it was a dumb thing to do. If for no other reason there is now a redneck out there that used to buzz cyclists for no reason. Now what will he do with a reason and might be more aggressive. If it is you he messes with, that is between you and him. If is is joe or sally doe out for a ride, they do not deserve your backlash.
