How much do good frames cost in Japan?
I need a new frame and my housemate will be in Tokyo next month. How much does a good track frame go for over there? Is it significantly cheaper than good track frames go for here? All I want is good quality for money, not neccesarily looking for anything with panache.

It really depends on the maker. It depends a lot on the maker.
Nagasawa is probably the hottest and most ¥ right now. That and 3rensho, of course.
What makers ARENT you interested in?
I think you once said you rode a big size?
That could pose a big problem in the hunt for your friend.

FYI, although they may not be as hot as a nagasawa, samson, 3rensho, etc., you can get a brand-new panasonic (NJS) for 74,000-yen with custom colour/stencilling, sizes 460-630mm. i expect you will need to order it to a local address, then ship it back home, if you were interested.

i have never ridden one, so i can not comment on the ride/feel.

Maybe I should look into the Panasonic; I do have a friend who just recently moved to Japan.

Track frames litter back alleys in Japan, where tortured Keirin ex-pros stumble drunk, ranting about that damned NJS and the wind resistance of such huge helmets. Most of the used frames eventually end up in piles at scrap-metal yards where they are melted down for use as doorstops. If you happen to find a used frame at a shop, chances are they'll force it on you, perhaps even offering you money to take the cursed thing off their hands. If you end up in a crooked shop where they expect you to pay for a frame like that, it'll run you something outrageous like ¥50. Highway robbery, I tell you.
