Bernard Hinault's: "Road Racing Technique and Training"

The bible. Excellent details on bike set-up, handling and how to train like a pro.

Plus plenty of photos of Hinault's favourite subject.

Eddy B's. A lot of it is still valid. And the stuff that's dated will give you perspective.

Bike Racing 101 wasn't what I expected from the writers. Those guys have so much experience, yet their book was terribly watered down.

'Lance's War'. At least the best book on pro bike racing. By far, nothing else I've read comes close.

The REAL book on bike racing is the book of hard racing knocks. Just suit up and race, often and persistently. You'll learn everything you need to know in good time my little weenie.

True, but you don't think it is of particular value to a Newbie??

Thomas Prehn, Racing Tactics for Cyclists. Chapter 2 on pacelines should be required reading for obtaining a racing license, it never ceases to amaze me how poor most paceline skills are on big group rides.

at risk of sounding redundant, but Krabbe, the old fart, still has a mean sprint.

That depends on what you're looking for. Intro to racing? Detailed training "how to"? Fiction novel? Race strategy & tactics? Technique? Documentary?

+1000, just finished it--linguistically compact and vivid enough to let your imagination run.

I second The Rider & Lance Armstrongs War, both were great reads.

Since we're on the topic has anyone read "The Long Season: One Year of Bicycle Road Racing in California" , what was your opinion?

+1 on Krabbe's The Rider for an insight on the mind of a bike racer.

For pure and simple road racing tactics there's an e-book Professional Road Race Tactics for Amateur Cycling Teams by David Harrison. It's an amazing primer on all things racing.

So turning round to look at the books I'd say:
The Rider, agree with everything that's been said.

Flying Scotsman, The Graeme Obree story. Brilliant and honest account of GO's life, the world hour record, the rainbow jersey, his decent into mental illness and suicude attempts. Amazing

I also enjoyed The escape artist by Matt Seaton, dunno if you can get it in the US, the story of a club cyclist an why he races.

Put me back on my bike: In search of Tom Simpson by William Fotheringham.

French Revolutions: Cycling the Tour De France By Tim Moore - Very, Very, Very funny.

Just ordered that book on Amazon. I wasn't aware that Krabbe was also authored The Vanishing. Didn't read the book, but the movie (the Dutch version) was disturbing, yet pretty phenomenal.

The best cycling book I have ever read. Grahme Obree's book is a very close second.
