Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mod Note:

Now stickying the new and improved Under $750 Roadbike thread.

I actually like this idea. I'm new to the road scene and was looking through that sticky a while back. of course once I got to the bike store I ended up spending way more but that old one was making my head spin.

I really wish we could do Wikis rather than the current Sticky system for FAQs. They do grow into cumbersome and unwieldy beasts quickly.

Okay, I'll be productive and contribute positively to this thread. I've posted this before but here it is again.

Here is my 2006 Schwinn Fastback 27 I purchased for $649 at my LBS. MSRP: $899.
Tiagra shifters and front der w/105 rear der. The pedals came with it though I will be replacing them with SPD.

See #10. Last time I checked my LBS still have the 2005 GT GTR Series 3 for $599, originally $1049. The bike is full tiagra: shifters, front and rear derailleur with a double. If any of you are in the bay area I can point out the place to you.

Just checking, mtnwalker, are you refering to a Performance store as your LBS?

Yes, it is . I wasn't sure if we can name LBS's around here so I was kinda hesitant. I frequent the one in Mountain View.

Sub-Sora level kit. The design (thumb shifter) seems similar, but I think the levers are black. I would guess the difference is in build and materials. I would avoid it (though I am a fairly big fan of Sora).

There is also a Schwinn Le Tour at $579. And my LBS sells the Le Tour GS, list $750, for $675.

And the Fuji Newest 3.0:

And Fuji Newest 4.0:

Even the Fuji Newest 2.0 is just $720 list:

According to my LBS, the 2007 Lemond Etape that you included above, now carries a list of $749.

Perhaps you will need to bump up the limit to $750.

If so, then you can also include the Bianchi Fremont, at $739.

I would but I would need a mod to change the title to $750

Best way to improve the thread is add $300 to the title.

I disagree. Not everyone out there can spend 1000.00 on a bike. I know tons of people who are on sub-1k dollar bikes, and couldnt be happier. And after all, isnt that all that matters?

2006 Specialized Allez Sport -

Here's a recent pic in its current state (upgraded just a few things, i.e. saddle, wheels, pedals, bottle cages), but I had gotten the bike for $700 back in August of last year.

It's a solid bike, and I've put 900 miles on her so far. Shifting is crisp (Tiagra FD, 105 RD, Tiagra shifters), and it handles great. I test rode the Trek 1000 and felt that the Allez was a bit more responsive (some may call it twitchy, but I've descended at 40+ mph and didn't feel stability was a problem). Overall, it's a great bike to get into the sport.

I have to say, I found the old thread rather unhelpful. The "zomg I got this $3000 bike for $299 at my LBS!" doesn't tell me what I need to know if I'm trying to do research on entry-level road bikes.

So in the interest of being helpful, anyone know about the updated Jamis Ventura Sport? I think they used a few cheaper components than the 2006 model and dropped the MSRP to $535, so I'm wondering if it's still any good.

And for the obligatory pic....

1) Updated the title to be under $750 bike thread.

2) There are plenty of good bikes out there around this price point and far under $1000. While the next price step up may be a good bang-for-the-buck spot for newer riders, there are plenty of riders out there that just can't spend that.

3) Be respectful to those trying to help fellow members both new and old by posting these different models and information in the thread. I would rather not have to delete out off topic flames please.

4) I may stick this one in place of the old one. Keep tuned for developments.

Any campy bikes for under $750? I'm curious about the '07 Mirage and Veloce stuff since that seems to be on par with Shimano's Sora and Tiagra.
