2007 Resolutions

There's a thread in the Southern California group about our 2007 Goals (and another about whether we attained our 2006 goals). But, I certainly feel more at home here on Clydes (and certainly more welcome and encouraged), so I thought I'd recreate it here.

Mine:

Drop my weight below 250 lbs. (currently: 283)
Complete three "easy" centuries (currently ride 50-60 milers)
Complete at least one "hard" or hilly century
Begin riding to the start of local club rides (20 miles away, one way) so I do at least 70-miles on Saturdays
Train more with local racing club/team

That's it. What are yours?

Awesome! I rode Mt. Mitchell in 1988 and again in 1990. Nothing like having a mass start with 1,500 riders! It is the ride I compare all others too.

I´ll throw in some more "Finish my dissertation"s... That´s definitely the main objective to achieve; but I want to drop to 200 from now 250, too. That will request some cycling, running, swimming (no specific goals here) and - most scary - getting used to that feeling of hunger/appetite. Argh.

I've done the math, and my 2007 goal is to lose 30 pounds to get myself back under 12% bodyfat. Not that I'll ever leave the Clydes, mind you... At 12%, I'll still be 230 pounds. Heck, at 1% I'd still be more than a shade over 200 pounds. I don't powerlift anymore, so keeping the extra mass that I used to fuel my gym sessions isn't helping me now. Plus, I think I'll climb a lot easier (hills on the bike, and the wall at the rock gym) if I manage to ditch a few pounds.
Soda and beer are the tough things for me to cut out. I really like my Cokes (only one every couple days; I ration them because I have to go to Canada to get Coke with real sugar, not HFCS) and my evening pint (which I know exactly how much grain goes into it because I brew it myself.)
I've already managed to quit smoking last week, so we'll see how the lack of soda and beer plays into that. I might become one grumpy commuter for a little while.

Meet or exceed all previous monthy totals for commuting to work (records back to 1988).

Solo tour somewhere in the US. I may do the middle leg of Lewis and Clark. Might do the Ohio Valley (I'd get at least 5 states, maybe 7 if I start in Arkansas ) Might do the "Brussel Sprouts Tour" in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. I just haven't decided yet.

The summary goals for 2007:
1) Buy bike.
2) Ride lots.

To elaborate further on #2, I have immediate goals that I'm locked into:
- Settle into a solid riding schedule that will help me realize the following goals...
- Ride a day or two of RAGBRAI (if I had more vacation time, I'd do the whole week. Next year.)
- Ride to work a day on Bike to Work Week. (I live in Ames and work in Des Moines which is 70 miles RT)
- Drop below the "Mendoza Line"

Train smarter

So far Ive dropped from about 285-290 to 270 in the last month and a half, and that was just with a change in diet. I used FITDAY religously until to make myself aware of what I was taking in, now I am sort of conditioned as to what to eat. I hit the trainer once or twice a week and hit the road on weekends right now but starting next week Im going to commit to the trainer 5x during the week. Once I'm done coaching wrestling in the first week of March Ill start hitting the road each day after school. I'm going to take my bike with me and ride where I teach because I know I'll lose motivation on the drive home, it just saps the energy right out of me. I also want to train smarter, lay a base, pay attention to HR zones, do intervals etc.
Kind of sort of find myself fascinated by triathlons lately, maybe considering training for a sprint tri during the summer and try one in early fall/late summer. I'd need to drop some weight to be able to run, that is the biggest issue. I know I can handle the 15 mile bike ride, swimming I think I could do with training, its just the run that scares me. We'll see what happens...Good luck everyone!

2007 cycling goals

2007 goals:
  • ride 4000+ miles (rode 3000+ this year)
  • drop weight down to 220 (currently 273)
  • ride on more club rides (TCBA - Lansing, MI)
  • ride two easy centuries (nice and flat centuries)
  • get a new road bicycle (Bianchi Giro?)

Stretch goals:
  • drop weight to 200
  • participate in One Day Ride Across Michigan (ODRAM) - 153 miles

There's actually a lot of research that went into SS, BC, and I'm pretty sure Dora. Mostly a lot of scaffolding and repetition to keep interest high and fustration low. A few schools of thought feel the wiggles and purple guy are more harmful because they talk down and don't encourage children to improve language skills.
