I live in Echo Park and the local bangers know I control 2 square miles of this town. The weekly multiple gunshots I hear in the middle of the night do echo up into the hillsides, usually followed by 45 minutes of police chopper hovering over my barrio. I still can't believe old, small 2 bedroom homes selling for over 600k on my street despite all this crap down below...
The cholitos leave me alone when I ride though.......I like that.

I don't get the map. Is there a description or instructions? My daily commute goes through some shaded area called Blythe Street which is also in an outlined "clear site" called mission.

Yep, I live in the midst of the Venice Crips. So far so good but I still hear some incidents here and there.

Our studio hosted a fundraiser for protecting public murals on friday night, and our councilman Bill Rosendahl attended. One of the mural issues is that they get tagged pretty often. Seems the gangs have figured out that the city will clean a blank wall very quickly, but won't clean a mural because it might ruin it.

Most of the murals throughout the city are covered with a special anti-graffiti wax. The one on the side of our building is not, and it will cost a bunch of money to fix it. Funny thing...the mural was painted in '75, and has "Stop the Pigs" in 4 ft high letters. Its supposed to look like graffiti, so the new graffiti is covering the "art" graffiti.

Rosendahl told us gang violence is usually about turf, and most of the time, its about drug sale turf.

I've heard the Culver City boys tried or did bikejack two of the Lagrange riders a while back. I used to skate with a crew down ballona creek over to the bike path on Culver Blvd weds nights. We saw them a few times, and they left us alone.

Know your local gang means get to know your venice neighbors. Thanks for the link.

Is that the abridged version? There are over 200 gangs just in Fullerton, so I know there have got to be more in LA. My dad has more than 10 represented at his middle school in south-central (slauson and avalon). I was expecting to see a list of hundreds. Or maybe those are just the big ones.

Those are just the gangs that LA has injunctions on, meaning that even if they are just found gathered somewhere they can be brought up on gang charges.

I'm a middle school teacher, and some of my students are sleepy once a week because they are the lookouts for their neighborhood gang. It's sad, but they reel these kids in early. Not worth joking about for me, because I can tell you, getting a letter delivered to your classroom that a student was shot and killed over the weekend is not a pleasant experience.

F-Troop is nothing to scoff at. The 18th Street gang tried to move in on their territory and basically got their a$$es handed to them. F-Troop is being federally indicted also. The problem with F-Troop is they're seen as being like a sort of Robinhood type gang in their communities.

Kids get into gangs starting at around 8 years old. Most of the Hispanic gangs are generational so you have entire families banging. Gangs fascinate me. I did my senior thesis on anti gang strategies. Injunctions are awesome.

Before riding the San Gabriel River trail last year during our visit to Seal Beach, I researched the route and came up with this site. I recall that it had a link to a very in-depth research site on LA gang activity. Because of this thread I looked it over again and see that it's been updated. I couldn't find the same link, however, at the very bottom there's a link to "Hazards" and a 2006 update that reads:

2006 update -- Grafitti and gang activity have been noticably increasing. Warning! - Ballona Creek is now considered unsafe due to uncontrolled Mexican Gang activity. The LA River, Rio Hondo, Coyote Creek and the San Gabriel River trails are all deteriorating with increasing grafitti and dangerous Mexican Gang activity. It is likely within a few years that parts of these trails will no longer be safe for other than large groups. Warning signs include large amounts of grafitti and housing projects.

Very dangerous (completely avoid): Ballona Creek, Southern LA River trail (West side of river, particularily North of the Rio Hondo junction)
Dangerous: LA River, Rio Hondo (Approaching LA River), San Gabriel River (South of Whittier Narrows through Downey), Coyote Creek
Deteriorating: San Gabriel River, Rio Hondo

Crips kill more crips than bloods do.

That inthehat blog is really good too. I haven't read it in a while though.
