turned my san jose into a 7speed (purists avert your eyes)
Guys I turned my Bianchi San Jose into a 7 speed. Singlespeed was cool, but I would rather wreck my knees during ski season. My LBSput an ultegra bar end shifter on friction mode, and paired it with a sram chain, campy mirage long cage derailleur, and shimano 7speed freewheel (13-34). Gotta say, the thing is as quiet as when it was only a single speed!

Bianchi makes a bike for that. It's called a Volpe.

It's not my cup o' tea, but hey... It's also not my bike.

Frankly, I love your bike! It boldly defies convention on so many levels: mixing Campy and Shimano, using a derailer adaptor claw with a high-end derailer, putting a mountain freewheel on a modern road bike, converting a singlespeed-purist bike into a geared bike. More power to you

I like it! Reminds me of Sheldon Brown's Rambouillet (fixed to 7 speed freewheel).
I'm converting a 15 speed touring bike to a single chainring 5 speed. I'll give up the gear range for the simplicity of a single gear shifter anyday.

Now you have a Bianchi Castro Valley without the fenders or dynohub. I guess you just don't like green very much, now do you?

Honestly, this thing rides better than the volpe. I test rode the volpe and the tiagra/deore setup was a little noisey, and wasn't into the light on the castro valley. I really just wanted a couple of gears. I was planning to put a nexus hub onto the san jose, but the nice older German guy at the shop talked me out of it. I have a 20 mile round trip commute, and just finished my first one with the new set up. Rides smooth, although it was so windy that I don't know exactly how smooth. It seems to spin nicely and I love the friction shifter. Wanted a steel bike for winter commuting, and this thing is totally gonna work!

maddy13, I just picked up a San Jose for winter commute purposes. It is a sweet bike. I'm running mine fixed, I love it.
If I ever go gears I'm going to do a Nexus Premium. That appeals to me, going on the simple/low maintenance feel of the bike.

I was expecting a nexus hub because that is a popular conversion-a guy I see on my daily ride has one-I built a motobecane track bike with the premium nexus-pretty fair ride and much lighter than a San Jose/nexus-I want to get my hands on the new sram i-motion 9 and put it in a Jamis sputnick for a nice light race/rec bike.

The guy that worked on my bike was this older German fellow that used to race in Europe when singlespeeds were the only thing allowed. He seemed to think that while the Europeans had been using internal hubs forever, Shimano had not quite gotten them down. Hence my weird setup (that works great so far).
I really want to know about the premium, though. Lighter is good!

Well, you don't see THAT every day!
Thanks for the post. If I ever decide to go crazy with my San Jose, maybe I'll do something like that. I do like the internal geared hubs, but they all have way too wide of a gear spread for my flat commute, so something like a 13-21 would be the only way I'd go. (If anyone knows of a currently available, close-ratio, internal hub, let me know.)
