October commuting challenge!
With props to DogBoy, who started the challenges back in January that got me commuting EVERY DAY this year so far (except one forced week off for training at work)!! Thanks man!
I figure October is the first full month where it's starting to get into colder weather. If you intend to commute all winter long, NOW is the time to start. Commute regularly starting now and you'll get used to the weather as it comes on.
The challenge is to set a goal to commute every day by bike. Some people allow a few emergency/sick days. You may have to exclude certain days of the week for errands or what-have-you. It's really up to you and what you feel is achievable, but don't sell yourself short. Aim high.
There is no prize apart from pride, and no consequences for failure other than your own disappointment. This is all about setting your own goals and reaching them. And a little public bragging when you do.
For reference, here's the last challenge, which was for May. I'll start a separate thread each month throughout the winter. Take one day, one week, one month at a time, and you'll rack up more days than you probably thought possible!

No one carries the DogBoy
Okay, March was my last participation month so I'll climb back on board now that I don't have to worry about IM training anymore. I plan to go winter through, so I'll need motivation to keep me going through Oct - March. I may drop off again next summer.
So, for October I know I have 2 days where I need a car for work, leaving me with 18 days available. I also have a week of picking up the daughter, which will knock out 3 more days. This leaves me with a goal of 15/18 days for commuting. I also call for an exemption if my wife delivers early. She is expecting late November. If baby comes early I reserve the right to retroactively restate my goals!
Thanks for reviving the challenge thread!

I'm in. Of course, I really have no choice as my bike is my only transportation other than walking. I need to look for a raincoat for riding; my overcoat is not quite working.

I'm in. I'll set a goal of riding 20/23 days. That gives me a day a week for unforseen stuff.

I'll ride often, but not daily. But I will be able to use the motivation. Are there kudos for last place?

Dogboy, good to see you, and good luck with the kid!
capejohn, any goal is a worthy one. Even just knowing that I was going to post to the challenge thread days ridden at the end of the month made me ride those few extra days I might have wimped out.
To the carfree people, hats off. I live 5 miles out of town personally so getting kids to school events means no carfree for me.

Alright...i'm in. My goal is at least 1 day a week, up to 3.
I'm still trying to work out this uber-long-distance commuting, but I'm finally getting my new mountain bike "dialed in" to me. Thanks for posting the challenge...feels like it gives me a chance to start over in my mind.

I'm game. My only driving day is Friday because I have a mid-day meeting 9 miles away at one of my company's other facilities, so my goal is 4 days a week for all of October. I punked out this month and drove in this past Thursday because when my alarm went off at 4:50am I decided that I'd rather take an extra half hour curled up with my g/f than suit up and ride in the fog again.

I just crunched my September numbers and I'm at 60%...So my goal for october's going to be 75% we had a really rainy september, so saying 90 seems like setting myself up for failure. as long as I don't wreck (knock on helmet) I think I can make 75, cold or not.

This is just what I need. I quit commuting in October 2005 for the "cold season." I'm such a wuss. This year, I want to make it through winter.
I just want to maintain my regular VLC 4x a week. Here's to trying.

I've commuted every trip but two since I started riding again in mid-May. I rode the bus half way to work the day I hit a chain at 15mph and needed some recovery time, and I rode home once when I was sick.
Considering I still don't have a working vehicle, it's either the bike or the bus, and the bus takes twice as long to get there as the bike does.

I am in. This will be the most number of days in a single month before retirement on 1-1-07. Hope to make every day to and from which should be 22 days if I do not have to work on a Saturday.

Hmmm, I normally commute through the winter, but this year I have December off. 10th Dec to 5th Jan. Getting back into commuting might be a bit hard in January - I'll have to ride through December just to keep acclimatized.

Did it all last winter, lets go ahead and do it again! (though when I travel to Orlando for work in December it will be a little difficult)
