Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Think you can put out some watts?

Today at Interbike in Las Vegas Gita Sporting Goods had an ERGOMO Power Meter set up on a stationary bike. They were having a contest to see who could put out the most watts of power for 15 seconds. How many can you do?

There were quite a few 770 watts... one guy named Aaron Harrison had a whopping 844 Watts Average for 15 secoonds... but then...

UCI Pro Magnus Backstedt (Liquigas) showed up... jumped on the bike in pants and tennis shoes... the average for 15 seconds... how about 953!! I did not see the peek, but 953 watts of power! That is SSTTTRRRROOOONNNGGG.

Duh--stationary bike. You have to be ~19mph for 400W.

My 15 sec ave watts occurred 6/22 this year - 878 watts. It happened as part of a warmup for 2 minute power intervals.

The thing is Magnus probably could hold that output for much longer, perhaps well over a minute or more, where I crash at 30 seconds - 658 watts.

My frame of reference is data from a powertap, and it may be true that Powertaps read high in short intense bursts. But I would have guessed that Backstedt would have been way above that. ( I don't have a file handy for 15 second power, but my 10 second power is above that, and I'm no great shakes) I'm guessing he's good for a lot more if it mattered.

Power readings from trainers suck.
Also, the OP mentioned he had tennis shoes on. And no warm-up. And honestly, he probably wasn't all that motivated, considering he was going up against a bunch of shop rats.

Is this the next chapter of "400W"??? Did you give the trainer "The Look"?!?

Perhaps there was something wrong with the dial. Maybe they should call R600 D/A. Either that or call Ghostbusters.

No look, the data is from my PT. I too think Magnus could put out way more under the right conditions. 900 watts for 15 seconds is really not that great for a big guy. That's why I suck at sprints.

'Maggy' was loafing... If you look at Dr. Coggan's power profile, the top line for 'International Pro' says:
24.04 (5s), 11.5(1min), 7.60(5min) and 6.4(FT) that's W/Kg... You do the math...

I can do around 27 watts for 15 seconds, but only if I'm warmed up.

At the Bike Fair before the BP MS 150, they had Treks set up on meters for a contest. I posted 458 average for 60 seconds with a peak of 690. Crawled off the bike & wound up sitting on the floor with my head between my knees in an attempt to retain contact with reality.

We had a computrainer set up at a local crit race this summer. It averaged your wattage for an entire minute. Right after a crit, I jumped on and avg'ed 690 for a minute with a peak of 919.

I'm guessing those were WAY LESS THAN IDEAL conditions. I'll bet $$$ that with a warmup, a moving start, and an actual road he could do a lot more than that. Hell, I suck at sprinting and I have averaged 1000 watts for 13 seconds during a sprint interval. Being on a real bike on a real road would make a huge difference. I'll bet Backstedt can do 1400 watts for that long in a "real" situation.

Depending on your weight, that's very impressive. Being able to hold 10 watts/kg for one minute is generally considered high Cat1 ability.

Yes but for that to be 10w/kg he'd have to weigh 99lbs. When I do 1 minute intervals, I'm shooting to be 500-600w. Unfortunately, I'm double the 99 lbs.

I read once about an effort to build a human-powered helicopter. They actually built the thing, and calculated that it could fly with just 500 (or 550?) sustained (minutes, at least) watts pumped into it. The trouble is, nobody can really sustain that level for long. They had test-riders pass out, vomit, generally mess themselves up trying to fly the thing - nobody's done it yet.
