I can't help myself. A good read is usualy better than a good movie. I can't wait to see some of the movies listed in the other post but in the mean time lets list some good books.
I'll start:
Um, I haven't read any. Your turn.

"Le Tour" by Geoffrey Wheatcroft
Aside from the class-isms, and the anti-Catholicisms, a great book, scholarly, without being inaccessible; some lovely touches, including little write-ups on the various regions of France.
Invaluable read.

The latest best read by Penguin right here.

Not a book but hey. A good read is a good read.
Now back to the books.

Surpised that nobody has yet to suggest "The Rider" by Tim Krabbe.
Best book that involves cycling. Ever.

"A Significant Other" by Matt Rendell.
Excellent book about racing from the perspective of the domestique...in particular, Victor Hugo Pena, who happened to get into the yellow jersey during the book's writing.

If VeloPress ever makes a decision on mine, I'll recommend it.
They've been considering it for over a year now.

1.) Lance's War
Best sports book I've ever read. Period. And not that flattering towards Lance either. Very real. Very eye opening about Euro bike racing.
2.) Bobke II
The Team Lada 'Day at the Fair' story is without doubt the best cycling story you will ever read. This book is utterly priceless.

The Immortal Class by Travis Hugh Culley
A great story from a chicago bike messenger.
Also, I agree with "Heft on Wheels".
Best training book is yet to be produced. They are all pretty average and I've read every one published in the last 25 years. Maybe Coach Carl's E-book, just for the pure enormity of it, plus I like his attitude.

Lance's War: Provides a great insight into the world of professional cycling.
Not a cycling book, but a running book that you might appreciate:
Once a Runner, by John L. Parker.
Before I officially f***ed up my hamstring, this was a great inspiration for me to get out the door to track practice every day and get my @ss kicked by sub-1:50 800m guys.

Running With The Buffalos- Clearly not a biking book, but a really good read if you can understand running times. If you can't, you won't be able to fully grasp how hard these guys trained at high elevation. The story is great.

French Revolutions by Tim Moore. Describes his quest to ride the route of the Tour de France by himself. Very entertaining.

Duke of Kent started this so blame him for the thread highjack, I read(re-read) "Pre, The Story of America's Greatest running Legend" about once a year. The dude just loved to push himself. He seemed to care less about winning then how he ran. To him it was an art form, an expression. As for the two major movies made about him I prefer "Without Limits" over "Pre", but they are both worth a spot on anybody's netflicks lists.
