IRO Hub Locknut Failure

both my locknuts cracked in half. i have heard similar stories. if there is an IRO rep here... fix that ****! you have an otherwise decent product, why the ****ty parts!?!

I had one crack on a formula rear after a a couple hundred kms.

Nigh on impossible to get customer service or replacement parts for formula products, at least through Nashbar.

Yep, it's happened to me too. The LBS said they've had a ton of people come in with the same problem. They must not be hardened? I don't know. I bought a new hardened-steel one for $4.

same thing happens with surly ones. can anybody recommend a set that won't snap?

I'm not sure what brand my replacement was, but it seemed alot beefier than the IRO one.

this happens all the time with these hubs. It's not like it's some obscure part, go to your LBS and buy some locknuts. I think they're 9.5x1 but I could be wrong. Take one of your track nuts and they can put it on an axle to check the threading.

Agreed that these aren't the most bomber part in the bike industry, but it's a compromise between strength and the big, serrated design.

yeah, i'm just going to take the wheel to my LBS and get replacements. IRO should fix this though. i'd pay more for better locknuts, and i'm sure most would agree. IRO... i don't want to have to caveat my recommendation of your product to other prospective users. take my advice... FIX THAT ****!!!

i cracked a locknut too. it happens. oh well. formula makes good hubs affordable, so i'm not bent out of shape.

Happened to me a while ago too. Just make sure you have no space between the locknut and the bearing. They are probably design to fail as a safeguard when tightening the tracknuts so that you don't crush everything. They are also designed to fail before the threads on the axle do,which is smart.

I called him when I broke mine. Took my credit card number down and sent me three locknuts in the mail. To this day I have no idea how much he charged me, or if he charged me at all.

Uh, yeah, actually telling the company about a problem you are encountering with their product does tend to work a little better than just b!tching about it on the internet.

(Of course, half the time when you post about IRO on here Tony replies on the forum)

The reason I wasn't and am not concerned about giving him my credit card and forgetting to ask how much it was going to cost was because Tony is killer nice. I, and the majority (if not all) the people that have dealt with him know that he's awesome. He either did two things with my credit card number, charged me a buck or two or else gave them to me for free. I'm inclined to think the later after having dealt with him so much.

Mine broke too, probably cus I tightened my nuts too tight. Back that **** off in the future, you don't need to break a sweat wrenching on track nuts.

yeah, this is making me think... how tight is tight enough really? i'm a tighten until i can tighten no more kind of guy. partially b/c i'm 6'4" and 195 lbs. which i'm sure puts some serious stress on the axle.

I think it says 25-30 ft/lbs in the Park book? I tighten to that and I still went through a ton of the weak ones I ordered through Harris-- Next time I'm gonna get the beefier ones from here:
