Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

11,434 miles outdoors in five seasons since my hip replacement surgery.
That's some solid numbers on that replacement, and that doesn't even count the time on the trainer each off season.

I had some spare time today so I dug up my old riding logs and added some numbers.

One thing I love about keeping a hand-written log is that I keep the previous year's log open to the current week. Then as I add the new log's ride each time I can glance back and see what I did on that same day one year ago....two years ago...kinda fun because I note the weather too so you can compare that.

One pattern I saw today...
There is usually a ride or two right before Christmas, despite the snow and cold.
And each year there has been at least one time when I actually made it out doors in January too.

February seems to be the month I'm doomed to remain 100% indoors from past history.

11434/5 = 2286.8.

Humm, now must ride at least 2286.8 miles per year so I beat man with replacement hip.

shoot, bought bikes in July, only have 850 between the two, 2.5 days left in current year

Yeah, the average is a bit misleading since I started slow the first year.

2004=3,200
2005=3,526

Excellent. So THAT's what 'hipcycler' means eh? My Dad had both hips replaced a decade ago (he's 82 now) and he's still walking/swimming fine...

I bought my bike the end of August and I have 840 on it right now. Not including the 10 I'm going to ride home after work tonight.

Well...to my defense...I did suffer a crash not long after purchase and then shortly thereafter I got severe acute bronchitis from mixing it up with daily commute traffic. Both events took me off my bike for 5 solid weeks. Then I went home in August for 2 weeks. Shall I keep making 'scuses? Dammit...he's upping the mileage per year now

Just curious ... how many repetitions do you get out of an artificial hip joint before wear becomes an issue?

Normal use...whatever that is...should be about 20 years.
My case....gotta be less the way I'm using it. I got the ceramic ball in the joint because they wear better, but it's a moving part, just like a car, so eventually it will wear out and start hurting me again.

The good news is that the operation to pop out the sleeve and pop in a new one is supposed to be a lot easier than what I went through in 2000....with less rehab too.

Bottom line: I traded a few tough months and surgery for years of riding! I'll do the same again because it's a good trade off. It gave me my life back!

Congratulations. I crunched my number the other day for the past 3 years since I started riding. First 2 years on the MTB lowered the total quite a bit. But since converting almost totally to the road quite similar to yours. Congratulation again.

By the way find any off season activity yet?

Nope.
But I have my coach posting a workout for the week each week, starting with the new year. You can follow along from my web log...link in my sig. He just posted his plan for the week of Jan. 2nd.

Having this to work from, it will keep me focused for the next couple of months as I build the foundation for the outdoor season come March/April.

Can your hip handle cross-country skiing? It's a fantastic way to keep up your cardio during the winter.

Cross country skiing sounds perfect for him. One outfit on the trail and another at the chalet posing with a cup of cocoa

Ok so you have had your bikes for 1/2 a year according to my calculations you are averaging 4.61 miles a day...You should be proud of yourself!!! that is about 2.3 miles a day per bike I bet they need a rest after all that hard work!!!

So out of curiosity macca123 your averaging 450k's a week and still havent won a club race which leads me to guess you have not won a state title or been to national level yet you feel the need to berate every one elses achievements.

Some people ride for run which considering your level of achievement for the effort put in I would suggest you consider doing as it is becoming very apparent every time you open your mouth you confirm what an under achevier you are. I train with a 15yo National and State champion (road and track) and he doesnt put in the amount of klm's you do. So either you have no talent or no idea, so how about you stop trying to build your ego by being rude and insulting to others who use this forum.

Enough said.

Congratulations!!!

A cycling friend just had one hip replaced 2 weeks ago.. pain finally got to be too much.. hopes to be back on the bike in a few months... I will pass your story on to him for motivation..

Went for a yearly check up... doc asked how I feel... I said great, but getting up in the morning is a little harder, recovery time is longer, and aches last longer... Told him as soon as some part of me goes and it can be replaced, I'm there.. He thought I was nuts, but hey, if I can replace parts as they wear out.. I might be cycling as a Great Grandfather.

I rode 4600+ miles this year, 3500+ last year and 2650 the year before.. all outdoors except for about 200 miles..
and that's with all original parts..

Ahhh what do doctors know? Just keep the thing well lubed and you'll be fine. Shoot my brother has a '65 Chevy truck, and that thing's got gobs of moving parts, and it still runs. I just hope you got the American model. You don't want to be messin' with any of those finicky foreign deals.

Congrats on you milage!
