Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Today is stage 1 (criterium) of the Tour de Murrieta. Last year, I rode the TdM and won the 35+/45+ Cat 1-3 criterium, including current national and state champs, and former pros (Rahsaan Bahati). I won out of a break of three that I started. Really stoked on that.

Each year, I swap between doing this and a local (SDMBA/IMBA) mountain biking event called the "Archipelago Ride", titled such as it connects different open space trail networks, with some county and private use trails that are otherwise off limits. Usually around 40 mi and 4,000' elevation, without much road. Great event, tons of fun. There is a 1 hour start window and I usually start towards the middle or end, and don a Hawaiian shirt over my kit.

This year, I skipped so I could do the Arch ride. Only things is, they Arch ride has been postponed due to the rainy weather and soggy trails . I made some plans in the early afternoon instead to play with my jazz group at some baby shower, so now I am missing out on the TdM.

Here's a podium shot from TdM last year. One of my proudest wins. This one will live rent-free in my head forever.

Tales from out on the road. Out riding with Bob, and noticed a glip in his back wheel. It got worse and finally unrideable. I was thinking broken spoke. Not. Two consecutive drive side nipples pulling through the rim. We tried and failed. He took my bike back to get the car. Thankfully it’s a cool day
A Velox rim, probably from the 70s.

Throughout my multiple bike phase, wheels have always been the week link. Not enough of them. Just this week I decided to thin the herd. Keep two road bikes, and maybe all the wheels.

Got a gig this afternoon, a baby shower. I don't know the hosts, but they are co-workers of the guitar player and drummer I will be with. We're doing navy blazer, white dress shirt (no tie), khakis. I always want an excuse to wear a suit, but the matching trousers is probably a bit extra for this.

The gig is not paid - but we will be compensating handsomely with tacos and beer/wine. Time to load my keyboard and amp in the car and get dressed.

The torque converter is like a clutch in your auto trans. I "slips" when necessary, but at highway speed it should lock up. Out of range generally means the TCM doesn't see the required amount of slip or the expected lock up. Year and model? Code number?

I'm at the Grand canyon. Jacket was definitely required for the snowy portion of the day. Sun's out now so I stashed jacket in the van.

Monthly BF C&V Ride was today. I took the Circuit. I'm closing in on perfection. Saddle height and setback is good. Reach to the hoods is good, but they're 1-2cm too low, because of the old school Cinelli bar. Once I replace the bars and stem with 1 110mm stem and the Highway One bars, it should be actually perfect.

But I'm a dumbass. I was so excited to get to the ride that I forgot to put on sunscreen. Fortunately, today's been on and off cloudy, so that should help a little.

I quit at the end of the season that I turned 40. I was still on a cat 1,2 team and still doing decent but I got promoted at work and could no longer put in the riding hours/training. My new boss wasn’t exactly enamored with my racing either so I decided that it was time to hang it up.
