New member from Rails-to-Trails Conservancy
Greetings,
I’m the Director of Information Technology for Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and would like to introduce myself to the group. I'm here to promote our recently re-launched trail finder website Traillink.com which I think will be a useful resource to the entire group. I'm also here to ask for help with our mapping project in order to add spatial attributes to our trail records which will help promote trail use in your area. We’re mapping all the country’s rail-trails for the first time ever. This data will be freely available to the public on TrailLink.com. The help we need from you is easy – all you need is your GPS receiver. We are collecting GPS tracklog and specific waypoints for each rail-trail. Please visit https://www.traillink.com/gps.aspx for more detailed information or feel free to email me directly at frederick@railstotrails.org.
Thanks,
Frederick

Hi Frederick, I'd love to contribute data, but I don't have GPS. I'm certain that those who do will be happy to add values, those.

Thanks for your reply, East Hill.
I look forward to my correspondence on this forum and hope that our mapping project may interest some of you.
In the end, it's all about promoting local and national trail use and active transportation through walking and biking for RTC so we all share a common cause. RTC is also very involved in active transportation issues on a national policy level. If you're interested in learning more, please visit our Burn Calories, Not Carbon page on our main site.
Thanks again!

By the way, I support RTC through the Combined Federal Campaign (through my workplace), so I am happy to see you here advocating!

welcome to bf!
i am sorry to see the removal of train-lines, the most efficient method to transport anything besides bicycling. my uncle was a "pullman" also.
i welcome you to bfx2, wish usa was heading towards decreased petro dependance (w/o nuclear devices)

Tom,
I understand your concern. The railroad corridors are acquired through a voluntary agreement between the railroad companies and trail agencies called railbanking and can be re-converted to rails whenever necessary. This protects the corridors from being abandoned and by being acquired by adjacent landowners for good. Please visit here for more info: https://www.railstotrails.org/whatwed...ilbanking.html

Great, we really appreciate your support. The Combined Federal Campaign has been a great support for our mission over the years.
Cheers,
Frederick
