Brompton Main Tube Hinge snapped

Hi

I was riding my Brompton today and the hinge snapped- the main tube hinge. It was the the bottom section of the main hinge.

Is this repairable? Or worth the $$$ to repair?

Doesn't look like it...

Thanks,
James

We know the rear hinge can be replaced:

...but for the main hinge, dunno.

Typical question with inadequate detail of what you are referring to ,,

will await pictures ..

It was the the bottom section of the main hinge.
You mean the bottom first fold? rear wheel portion Pivot
or main tube big hinge, with the pac-man clamp and T handle.

I'm sorry to see this. What a bummer. I'm wondering why it came apart with the clasp tightened properly. Perhaps a case of metal fatigue. Is the bike still under warranty and can that warranty be served where you purchased it?

I hope the best outcome for you on this.

Looks like a defect. If you are the original owner, find a Brompton dealer and bring it in to see what they have to say regarding warranty coverage.

Otherwise, see if you can buy just the front part of the frame direct from Brompton, maybe at some kind of "crash replacement" pricing... assuming that hinge assembly is the same one they use now?

I believe it is repairable. I'm pretty sure that full frames are available from Brompton for ~$500-$600 depending on the color. Looks like you may only need the headtube section of the frame. But I don't think that is available as a separate part. How old is the bike? Did you purchase it new from an authorized Brompton dealer?

Looks like a bad casting to me, brittle fracture caused by incorrect cooling rate or incorrect heat treatment after it was cast.
