Using a set of Campy NR shifters with a NR rear derailleur. Need a chunk of housing between the seat stay and RD body. I know steel housing is period correct, but I want to know what works.
Any suggestions?

I really don't know as my Campy fu is suspect at best.

I have always thought they used the bare housing with special end partly because it really limited the outlay for that piece being the only shift cable housing needed for the DT shifters that existed for a millennia. May have also been bare so it would not hang onto moisture much, what do I know.

I also think most covered cable casing was fairly crappy for most of that time so they saved money and avoided other problems along the way.

Now days most good cable casing works well and doesn't suffer the things it used to as much.

I personally would and do use leftover pieces when needed and they always seem to be fine these days, again, just my 2c, what do I know.

If you are referring to the coiled steel housing, using a short piece of it from the frame stop to derailleur does not hurt the shifting. But in any case, I have used Jagwire cable housing with the NR and other derailleurs of the period. The only issue is that the housing is stiff and will not bend in as tight a loop as the old housing can.

Thanks for the answers. I’ve run into sporadic slippping of Campy shifters in the last few years. None in decades past. Since I’m building up this bike from the frame, I want to eliminate all variables to try to solve the issue once and for all. Sounds like thousing isn’t critical.

I would look in a local co-op for some of the stainless housing. We ordered it in 50 foot rolls back in the1980's and it was always available. Now days it seems hard to find, but there are bikes that come in with bar con levers that are dismantled and the small bits of stainless are just tossed in the used housing bins. HTH, Smiles, MH

On my NR bikes I use the classic coiled housing, but I also run a length of teflon lining through it as well.

depending on the frame's braze ons you may need the special stepped end piece.

Thanks. I think I have the right one, but will know as soon as I cut the housing. malcala622 Kindly offered some up, but I just now found a bit buried in a box where it was not supposed to be.
Still, its funny that those ends, a bitty part, can cause a project to grind to a halt.

Although some modern ferrules such as Jagwire can fit and shift just fine, they look wrong. If you're stuck in the past like I am (hey, this is C&V is it not?) then you want real Campy ferrules # 619 and 620.

#619 if you use the bolt-on housing stop clip on the chainstay, #620 if you have a Campy #621 "diver's helmet" braze-on or equivalent.

I don't know that seller, not endorsing, just turned up in a brief search.

You can tell real Campy ferrules from the Record/NR era because they have a little flip to the outer edge, that sort of funnels the housing into the ferrule:

Euro-Asia claims to still have them, on their website. They're wholesale only, so you'd have to find an LBS that's willing to order some for you. I expect the price will be high.
The Euro-Asia pic shows it bright plated, nickel I think it is, but you'll generally find them tarnished to a darker grey.

EDIT: I just remembered, Harry Havnoonian has the step-down ferrules for sale, genuine Campagnolo. 2 ferrules plus two diver's helmet braze ons for $20 here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/254825540995
You may not need the braze ons but it's a way to get genuine Campy ferrules — if you're into that!

Note that the housing looks very similar to what campy used for Bar Con housing, but it isn't the same. The Bar Con housing is thicker and if I recall, the ferule really doesn't fit into it.

Get some nylon or Teflon cable liner tubing and thread it into the coiled, stainless housing as recommended earlier. It will stiffen the housing and aid in the smoothness of the shift quality. The translucent housing just slides right into the stainless outer and is not visible through the coils. Correct ferrules help as well.

Thanks for the divers helmet photo.Thought it looked like that, now its confirmed. FWIW, Velo Orange has the step downs for a buck each. I think that’s where the one I found in my jar of ferrules came from. It seems to fit .

Does campy ferrule #619 actually fit down into the nuovo record derailleur? I have a bunch of ferrules, old and new, none fit into my NR derailleur. So I used a small stepped one.
